The clown (Acrylic print)
Who will make the jester laugh?
"When I'm alone on the stage,
telling a story, spinning a joke,
like a barrel of gunpowder,
only the fire within me has long gone out."
(Ronny Someck, *Jester*)
It is the clown's fate to continue entertaining the audience even when his heart is broken. The famous aria from Leoncavallo's opera *Pagliacci* ("Vesti la giubba") includes the self-command, "Laugh, Pagliaccio!" which compels the character to perform for the audience despite his sorrow. These were the major sources of inspiration for this work, where the jester's colorful appearance stands in stark contrast to his true heart and thoughts.
