"And He said, 'Take now thy son, thine only son, whom thou lovest, even Isaac, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.'" (Genesis 22:2)
The story of the Binding of Isaac encapsulates the relationship of trust and love between a father and his son and between a man and his God, all through an unbearable test of loyalty. Abraham, who places the wood for the offering in Isaac's hands and takes the fire and the knife in his own, is about to bind his son, who still believes, like an innocent lamb, that a real sheep will soon appear for them to sacrifice.
The painting of the Binding of Isaac documents that very moment when the lamb embodies the fruit of waiting: both for Abraham, who is fearful yet suppresses the moment of sacrificing his beloved son, and for Isaac, who with a naive, childlike gaze, searches for signs of the lamb's appearance, just before he is bound to the altar and the command from above is given to refrain.
