Daniel in the lions' den
Daniel in the Lions' Den: A Story of Faith and Survival
The story of Daniel in the lions' den, from Chapter 6 of the Book of Daniel, is a powerful tale of faith and miraculous rescue.
Daniel served with distinction in the Persian court under King Darius, earning the king's favor. This inspired jealousy among other high officials, who plotted against him. Knowing Daniel's unwavering devotion to God, they tricked King Darius into signing an irreversible decree: for thirty days, no one could pray to any god or man except the king. The punishment for disobedience was death in the lions' den.
Daniel refused to abandon his faith. He continued to pray to God three times a day in his home, with his windows open toward Jerusalem. His enemies quickly reported him to the king.
Bound by his own law, a grief-stricken King Darius had no choice but to order Daniel to be thrown into the lions' den. However, he expressed hope, saying, "May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!"
The next morning, the anxious king rushed to the den and was overjoyed to find Daniel unharmed. Daniel explained, "My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions."
In response, the king had Daniel's accusers thrown to the lions, who were immediately devoured. King Darius then issued a new decree, commanding all his subjects to honor the God of Daniel, who had performed such a great deliverance. The story remains a timeless symbol of courage and faithfulness under pressure.
