The Spies
The Spies
"And they told him, and said, 'We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.'" (Numbers 13:27)
According to the Bible, eight spies carried the heavy cluster of grapes from that land flowing with milk and honey, but their news for the people was bitter: it was a land that devoured its inhabitants, and therefore the Israelites had no chance of inheriting it. This was a moment of crisis of trust and faith, which was overcome only by those who continued to speak well of the land even after the spies' news, and who were ultimately permitted to enter it.
The painting of the spies immortalizes the moment when the group of spies returns to the people waiting at the entrance to the Promised Land and the awe, expectation, and fatal uncertainty of the Israelites as they await the news.
