The Golden Calf (Framed print)
The Golden Calf
"And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing; and Moses’ anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount." (Exodus 32:19)
The Golden Calf is a symbol of perfect chaos: from the standing at Mount Sinai and the giving of the Torah to a severe crisis of faith between the people and God. From a sanctification of God's name to a moral abyss and idolatry. From a high place to a deep pit. Moses, as the intermediary, observes what is happening and acts accordingly: he smashes the tablets of the covenant, grinds the Golden Calf to powder, punishes the people, and finally apologizes on their behalf.
The painting presents Moses' point of view as he looks at the chaos created by that "stiff-necked people" and understands that there is no alternative but to destroy in order to establish a new, chosen people in its place.
