Jacob's Dream
Jacob's Dream
"And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it." (Genesis 28:12)
In his dream, Jacob saw a ladder (in Akkadian, the root S-L-M is interpreted as a flight of stairs) with its base on the earth and its top reaching to the heavens, with angels of God ascending and descending on it. This is the dream in which God revealed Himself to Jacob and promised him the land on which he was lying, along with protection for the rest of his journey, at the end of which he would become Israel.
Jacob must have been having a sweet dream, and the peace on his face is well reflected in the artist Becky's interpretation. Yet the ladder in Jacob's dream is not a metaphor, but a tangible expression of the connection between heaven and earth, which can only be achieved after fulfilling one's personal destiny and following the path of the dream after waking, until the complete and perfect identity is revealed through appropriate actions.
